Did you know that these days YouTube is the number two search engine in the world?

If you thought that this whole online video business is another overhyped, passing fad, well think again! Today the use of online video is continually gaining momentum, with more people choosing to view videos rather than read case studies, white papers and other written content. Hence using online videos not only in your content marketing strategy, but also everyday life, has become the way of the future.

Social Networking VS Online Video

Cisco’s new Visual Networking Index forecast, and Studies done by marketing giants, Eloqua and CMO.com on how we all spend our time and bandwidth, points to social networking as the world’s most popular type of consumer service today.

Check out how Cisco predicts Social Media will evolve over the next few years:

But it gets better:

Cisco’s report also demonstrates that all those increasing video streams will have a major impact on the bandwidth consumption. Online video in 2017 will account for 69 percent of consumer Internet traffic, (which is about 12% more than what it is currently) and see a rise to 1.4 zettabytes of global end-user IP traffic.

That’s more IP traffic that has been seen on the Internet in the last 18 years together! WOW

So, Why Online Video?

The fact that the web is trending towards the online video goes beyond the figures and facts above. Susan Weinschenk, Ph.D. sheds some light on the ever-evolving customer psychology and provides an insight to why consumers do the things they do.

Suzan has discovered four core, very human reasons to why we are drawn to videos:

1: The Fusiform Facial area makes us pay attention to faces – this is an actual brain function that hard-wires us to use the human face as a gathering point for information and believability.

2: Voice conveys rich information – yes, the simple sound of a human voice speaking to us has an amazing way of converting information into meaningful content.

3: Emotions are contagious – here’s a subtle but powerful aspect that we may take for granted. The body language of emotions is an appealing and we naturally love to share.

4: Movement grabs attention – another trait that runs deep in our collective anthropological DNA is the power of peripheral motion. Since the Stone Age, we’ve survived by noticing things in motion – looks like we still do!
